Rock Cut Park Ski - No Snow but...

With no snow in Rockford, the Rock Cut Park day ski trip was cancelled and replaced with a planned day trip to Love Creek Park in Berrien Spring, Michigan. The Love Creek predicted snowfall late in the week was 7” to 10”. The actual weekend snowfall turned out to be about 2”, not enough snow for the park to groom the trails. The park did not open for skiing on Sunday.  Again, another no snow weekend ski trip was changed to a local hike. I want to thank Bill Woodruff, our Web Master, for keeping the club web site up to date with my ski outing changes.

On Sunday January 12 at 10:00 AM Tom Wolos and Jim Adams met in North Aurora on Route 56 and hiked north on the east side of the river. The sky was clear and sunny. The temperature was about 25 degrees with about a 20 mile/hour wind come from the southwest. Everything was right for another great winter day hike. Tom and I talked and learned a lot about each other. In what seemed like a few minutes we reached Batavia. We both felt good and decided to continue north to Geneva. We knew the weather was right for a winter hike, when we noticed that geese were sleeping standing up in the shallow part of the unfrozen river! When we reached Geneva, at the Mill Race Inn, we crossed the river to the west side and headed south for the return trip. We stopped for a leisurely lunch in Batavia. After lunch we continued the hike on the west side of the river. We got back to our cars at about 2:00.

I’m looking forward to skiing and talking with Tom on the UP trip. Tom is a great guy. He is also active in many sports activities. I’m glade we had a great hike and good conversation. It was good to get to know another member of the ski club.
